Can you do 40 push ups? We've likely seen you take a break from the couch for 10 but that doesn't mean anything.
10 Pushups is great and it gets people moving, but it doesn't mean a whole lot. In fact not being able to do 10 pushups in a single setting had an increased risk for an adverse cardiac event to occur, while being able to complete 40 pushups at one time significantly lowered the risk.
This is not mean that you can screen for cardiac issues or someone that has cardiac issues will not be able to do 40 pushups, but that you risk is lower.
I like this study because of the easy application to the real world, you can either do it or you can't.
Sorry women! They did not test appy this study to you, but I have included the ACSM's 9th edition for pushup max values to give you something to aim for!
